Chester Beatty: the Honorary irishman

American Chester Beatty, was a self-made mining magnate and philanthropist.
Known as the ‘King of Copper’ he became a British citizen in 1933, was knighted in 1954 and was made an honorary citizen of Ireland in 1957.
A collector of manuscripts, rare books, prints and art, he became disillusioned with Britain and moved to Dublin in 1950, establishing the Chester Beatty Library.
When he died he became the first private citizen in Irish history ever to receive a state funeral. This fascinating documentary offers a unique insight into the man and his amazing collection.
