Chester Beatty: the Honorary irishman

American Chester Beatty, was a self-made mining magnate and philanthro­pist.

Known as the ‘King of Copper’ he became a British citizen in 1933, was knighted in 1954 and was made an honorary citizen of Ireland in 1957.

A collector of manuscript­s, rare books, prints and art, he became disillusio­ned with Britain and moved to Dublin in 1950, establishi­ng the Chester Beatty Library.

When he died he became the first private citizen in Irish history ever to receive a state funeral. This fascinatin­g documentar­y offers a unique insight into the man and his amazing collection.
