Kevin Costner is starring in a major new TV Western; Hamilton is ready to stream, and Chris O’Dowd is back in Get Shorty
When Kevin Costner signed up to play rancher John Dutton in Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone, he anticipated that the series would be wrapped up in one season. Such has been its success, however, that they are currently prepping season four in the US, even as season one reaches our screens. Written and directed by Sheridan, the man responsible for such memorable dramas as Hell or High Water (2017), Sicario (2017) and Wind River (2017), Yellowstone follows the fortunes of the Dutton family in Montana, where they own the largest contiguous ranch in the United States. With Costner as their no-nonsense patriarch, the family find themselves under constant threat from outside forces, ranging from encroaching land developers to the inhabitants of a nearby Native American reservation, anxious to reclaim some of their homeland. For his part, Dutton has little intention of relinquishing one inch of his property: “If a man had all the money in the world,” says Costner’s character at one point; “this is what he would buy.” While Costner is at the heart of the story, he is well supported by a top-notch ensemble cast including Wes Bentley, Kelly Reilly, Danny Huston and Cole Hauser. Could Yellowstone be this generation’s answer to The High Chaparral?
