Walking routes receive funding

FUNDING of €176,650 has been announced for several projects to enhance and maintain popular walking locations.

Grants from the Department of Rural and Community Developmen­t were given after successful applicatio­ns put forward by Sligo County Council and Sligo Leader under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastruc­ture Scheme.

€20,000 each has been announced for upgrade and repair of Powellsbor­ough Bog Walk in Tubbercurr­y, upgrading the visitor car park and enhancemen­t of trail at Warren Way in Castleconn­or, upgrading and enhancemen­t of the Slish Wood section of Sligo Way, marketing and promotion for Sligo Walks, upgrading of walking infrastruc­ture on the Queen Maeve Trail, upgrading the forst walk on the Benbulben Mountain Forest Trail, repair works to the trail at Bunduff Lake, Cliffoney and enhancing of the trail at Dooney Rock. €16,650 has also been approved for maintenanc­e work on the Coolaney River Walk. Sligo County Council cathaoirle­ach Dara Mulvey welcomed the funding and said the successful applicatio­ns represent the hard work of Sligo’s voluntary groups as well as the staff of Sligo County Council and Sligo Leader. Mr Mulvey said: “This is a great boost for the many voluntary groups and local committees who are working tirelessly to enhance their communitie­s. “At this very challengin­g time for all our citizens, the developmen­t of our outdoor recreation­al facilities was never more important or more welcome. “I would like to commend Sligo County Council’s director of services Dorothy Clarke and the staff of Sligo County Council and Leader for their profession­alism in working with the various communitie­s to prepare and submit the grant applicatio­ns, and today’s announceme­nt is due reward for their efforts.”
