Musical talent in an event inspired by Markievicz

-

THE Hawk’s Well Theatre will mark St Brigid’s Day with a presentation of an original production, Creating Constance. Performed by the Constance Ensemble, this streamed event offers a rare behindthe-scenes look at the production, which had been due to go on national tour before being cancelled due to the Covid19 pandemic.

As implied by the title, Constance is based on the life of Countess Markievicz as it delves into the story of one of Ireland’s best-known revolutionary figures. Creating Constance will feature an array of talented musicians which includes Niamh Crowley, Michael Rooney, Stephen Doherty, David Doocey, John Joe Kelly, Clare Horler, Marie O’Byrne and Shaza O’Hara.

The compositions featured throughout were composed by Michael Rooney and are paired with Constance’s prose and poetry, performed by Nichola MacEvilly. Interviews with director Kellie Hughes will also be shown. Speaking about her interest in the story of Constance Markievicz, she said: “I found a beautiful letter to her brother Josslyn, where she tells him ‘my enemies will make a monster out of me, my friends a heroine and both will be equally wide of the truth’ and I thought that is such a prophetic statement.

“She really understood how she was going to be viewed and she went for it anyway.”

Creating Constance is a free, but ticketed event. It will stream at 8pm, Friday, February 5 and will be available for viewing for 48 hours. You can book your ticket for this special streamed event via the Hawk’s Well website, www. hawkswell.com, or by emailing boxoffice@hawkswell.com.
