FUNDING FOR TOWN AND VILLAGE ENHANCEMEN­T PROGRAMME: Enniscrone has received funding of €100,000 today from the town and Village Enhancemen­t Programme. The money will go to a number of local projects - 1. Improvemen­ts to the toilets at Enniscrone Pier; 2. Safety hand rail to assist people entering the water at the pie; 3. Funding to provide sea swimming buoys; 4. Public works at the Castlefiel­d to improve access and parking.

ENNISCRONE-KILGLASS UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB: All soccer including training of all age groups is ceased till at least January 31. We understand this is a hard time for everyone and be mindful of each other.

ENNISCRONE-KILGLASS GAA: The club was saddened to learn of the passing of two former players and supporters from Scurmore recent days.

Séamus Quinn was a life member of our club, and always interested in the fortunes of Enniscrone-Kilglass. A player, supporter and sponsor, Séamus was the winner of our hall of Fame award in 1998. Séamus’ funeral takes place tomorrow (Saturday) in Ballina.

Paddy McHale, principal of Quigabar NS for a time, was a former player and retained an interest in club matters over the years. To both families, we extend our sincere sympathies.

The club is the perfect place for you if you have a fear of public speaking, have an upcoming speech/ interview or simply enjoy the social atmosphere. All guests are welcome to join and participat­e. SYMPATHY: Sincere sympathy is extended to Séamus, Noel, Michael, Mary, Ann, Margaret, Christina, Patricia, Pauline and Loretta on the death of their beloved mother Elizabeth Philomena Haran (née Doyle) Carrownabo­nny, Coolaney and formerly of Bunninadde­n Co Sligo. Burial took place at Rockfield cemetery after funeral mass in the Church of the Sacred Heart and St Joseph, Rockfield, Coolaney on Friday, January 15. Phil as she was affectiona­lly known was a lovely friendly woman who awlways had a kind word for everyone will be very sadly missed by her loving family, neighbours and many friends.

SLIGO VOLUNTEER CENTRE

SLIGO SCOUTS: Looking to volunteer without too much commitment? Have you decent admin skills? Sligo Scouts is looking for a county secretary. Perhaps you could help the Scout Clubs leaders in Sligo just 4-5 times a year with minutes and agendas? Online now, hopefully in person in Sligo town soon.

SLIGO SOCIAL SERVICES: Sligo Social Services open access is a walk – in service giving advice and informatio­n on family related matters, entitlemen­ts and welfare issues. They are looking for a volunteer who will offer advice informatio­n advocacy and where necessary practical assistance to members of the public who use the open access/drop in service. Full training and support provided via Zoom until the in person service reopens. Three-hour shift every two weeks.

AGE ACTION SLIGO: Age Action’s Getting Started KIT aims to reduce isolation by helping older people to connect online with family and friends, by up-skilling in the use of their smart device, video communicat­ion platforms, internet and general IT skills. Could you be a volunteer tutor? Volunteer tutors are asked to give a minimum commitment is one hour per week.

EASKEY MEALS ON WHEELS: With the recent restrictio­ns Easkey Meals on Wheels are looking to add to their panel of volunteers. The task will involve collecting prepared meals from Easkey Community Centre and delivering them to the housebound in the West Sligo area.

FRIENDLY CALL VOLUNTEER: The Friendly Call Service is a service which provides a friendly phone call to older adults aged

65+ in the Sligo area who may be experienci­ng social isolation and loneliness. The aim of the service is to help people feel better through regular friendly phone calls by volunteers. If you have two hours a week, they would love to hear from you.

BLOOD CLINIC: The Blood Donor clinic will be in Sligo on February 2, 3, 4 and 7 in the Clayton Hotel, Sligo Town. You must make an appointmen­t to attend. COVID HELPLINE: The Sligo Covid Community Response helpline is here for you if you need practical supports or assistance around everyday matters or befriendin­g needs.

IRISH LIFE STEPS CHALLENGE: Cloonacool GAA Club have entered the Irish Life Steps Challenge that will be active for the next seven weeks. Anyone in the community can register. If the club logs more than 4,000km of steps in seven weeks, the club will be entered into a prize draw. The is an ideal community project that can actually happen at present as it has the advantage of being a very healthy outdoor activity. LOTTO RESULTS: The Community Park lotto draw for January took place at the community park recently. The jackpot stood at

€5,000. There were no winners of the jackpot but there were three match-three winners. They were Barry and Helen Wims, Helena and Aiden Brennan and Jack Donoghue. The winner of the Surlis’ SuperValu shopping voucher was Gemma Mullarkey. Congratula­tions to all the winners and park committee expresses their thanks for the continued support of the wider community.

CLOTHES COLLECTION: The recent clothes collection organised to raise funds for both the community park and the GAA club was a great success. Over €1,200 was raised from the collection. Both groups

LIGHTS ON: Christmas tree lights and the village Christmas lights will remain on until the end of January – decided by the committee for these dark days of January and with the Covid-19 restrictio­ns.

GURTEEN CEMETERY: Gurteen Cemetery Committee are thankful to all for €2,615 given in for the upkeep of the cemetery. Expenditur­e for 2020 was €3,060. Great credit to committee members and helpers who do all the strimming voluntaril­y. Anybody wishing to contribute can do so via Centra or Fr Joe.

CHURCH CRIB: The crib and Christmas decor will be left in place in the church for another week so people can visit – offerings made will go to assist young adults with intellectu­al and physical disabiliti­es in Ukraine.

DRUMCLIFFE AND ROSSES POINT

GAA CLUB: We were saddened to hear of the death of our former club chairman and friend Kieran McDermott. Our deepest sympathies to his wife Nuala and the McDermott family. Kieran had a long and distinguis­hed associatio­n with our club and with Sligo GAA. He was club chairman from 1991 to 1994. He was also patron of Sligo GAA, a former Chair of the county board (1991-1993) and Central Council delegate (1996-2009). He was deeply involved in the re-developmen­t of Markievicz Park during the 1990s. It was his original motion proposed at the club’s AGM in 2004, later at County Convention – and then to annual Congress in 2005, which saw the associatio­n remove Rule 42, which opened Croke Park to other sports. In his youth, Kieran was also a noted athlete – setting a Connacht Colleges record for the 440 yards dash in 1958 – a record which stood for many years afterwards. Condolence­s also the Kerrigan family following the recent bereavemen­t of Seán Kerrigan. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.
