No fixtures for IT Sligo

- Aaron’s bout is cancelled

IT Sligo’s representative teams, including Gaelic football, hurling and Ladies Football, won’t be playing in the 2020-2021 season following the cancellation of national competitions for students.

Due to ongoing Covid-19 restrictions and the current uncertainty brought about by the pandemic, the GAA’s Higher Education Committee has called off the Third Level Championships that would normally take place during the remainder of this academic year. Michael Hyland, chairman of GAA Higher Education, said: “We’re very disappointed that our championships will not take place.”

“Comhairle Ardoideachais had planned for and were hopeful of all of our championships, including the Fitzgibbon and Sigerson Cups, going ahead but it is apparent that it won’t be possible for this year.”

He added: “We wish to thank all the colleges, clubs, club committees, students, students unions and the hard working development officers for their understanding and their ongoing commitment to our sector.”

The LGFA Higher Education Championships have also been suspended for the 2020-2021 academic season due to the current national restrictions to curb the spread of Covid-19.

The decision by the LGFA’s Higher Education Committee to postpone games means that there has been no competitive action in the current academic year, and is in line with other restrictions which have severely curtailed the ability of all teams to organise training (including contact training) and games since the suspension of the 2020 O’Connor Cup and other Championships last March.

Sligo professional boxer Aaron Gethins’ return to the ring has been curtailed once again by Covid-19 restrictions.

The welterweight, named ‘The Kid’, was due to compete in the Celtic Clash 11 event in Murcia, Spain this week but new measures in the country mean the event is now suspended until further notice.

Gethins was due to face Nicarguanborn Spanish veteran Michael Isaac Carrero, whose record stands at 13 wins, 58 defeats and six draws.

The 21-year-old, who has an unbeaten record of four wins so far, hasn’t fought since February 2, 2020.
