Greene says McEntee can prosper as county’s boss
PETER Greene, the former Sligo GAA treasurer, has given his backing to Sligo Senior team boss Tony McEntee.
Armagh native McEntee was appointed Sligo manager at the end of November last – replacing Sligo man Paul Taylor, who stepped down after two years in charge.
Ex-AIB employee Greene, a former inter-county goalkeeper with Fermanagh, thinks that the presence of McEntee, an AllIreland winner with Crossmaglen Rangers and Armagh, can spark a much-needed Sligo revival.
“The way Tony has gone about getting his management team together and assembling his squad is very encouraging,” Greene told the Belfast
Telegraph.
“I think as soon as the actual Allianz [Football] League fixtures are confirmed it will be a case of all systems go. There is no doubt that interest and enthusiasm have been heightened [in Sligo]. I think he is the ideal man for the job.”
Greene, who stepped down from the County Board’s top table last month after successfully battling to reduce Sligo GAA debts, continued: “To be honest, we can’t really go much further down so the only direction we can take is up.” “Division Four is the right place to start for Tony as an inter-county boss but he has ambitions, there is no doubt about that. If he gets a run at it, he can help to plot progress for Sligo.”
For this year’s revamped Allianz Football League Sligo have been placed in Division Four North – along with Antrim, Louth and Leitrim.
While the AFL and AHL were originally scheduled to begin at the end of February, the competitions are likely to be put back until mid-March, or later, depending on Covid-19 restrictions.
County panels are currently now allowed to train collectively until next month.
