Location sought for Cliffoney bottle bank

- By Alan Finn

SLIGO County Council hopes to identify a suitable location for a bottle bank in Cliffoney this year. A motion seeking an update on the provision of a bring centre was put forward by Cllr Marie Casserly at this week’s meeting of the Sligo-Drumcliffe municipal district.

In response, acting director of services Emer Concannon said that they will explore their options, including placing it on private land if necessary, if an agreement with the property owner can be reached. She added that it would take “a number of months” to address this under current circumstances but maintained the council intends to progress this issue this year.

In her report, she said: “It is proposed to liaise with the north

Sligo area engineer in the coming months to establish whether or not there are public lands available in the Cliffoney area for provision of a bottle bank facility.”

“If not, private lands would need to be identified and permission would need to be sought from the property owner and to whether they would be willing to allow a facility on said lands.”

“Given the current restrictions and circumstances, it will be a number of months before this will be addressed. But it is hoped to progress this item in 2021.” Ms Concannon also said there is planning compliance that needs to be taken into consideration as such an amenity can not be within 50 metres of any dwelling and there must be no overhead wires, while servicing of the site must also comply with health and safety of road users and those servicing the site.

Cllr Casserly welcomed the report but stated this needs to remain on the agenda as it is a busy village which needs such a facility.

The motion was supported by Cllr Thomas Healy who agreed that “Cliffoney has grown and we should be looking at more amenities out there”.

Cllr Donal Gilroy also agreed with the motion but warned that finding a suitable location 50 metres away from any dwelling in the area “is not simple”.
