Normal People and The Crown miss out on Golden Globes
THE HIT television miniseries Normal People missed out on two Golden Globe awards at last weekend’s ceremony.
The show, based on a book by author Sally Rooney and was primarily set and filmed in Sligo, was nominated for Best Miniseries or TV Film, while Daisy Edgar-Jones, who had a starring role as Marianne Sheridan, was in the running for Best Performance in a Miniseries or TV Film.
Normal People was nominated alongside Small Axe, The Undoing, Unorthodox and The Queen’s Gambit, the latter of which was named Best Miniseries or TV Film.
The star of The Queen’s Gambit, Anya Taylor-Joy, also pipped Daisy Edgar-Jones to the gong for best performance.
Also nominated for the award were Nicole Kidman in The Undoing, Cate Blanchett in Mrs America and Shira Haas in Unorthodox.
The night’s biggest winners belonged to another Netflix series which was on radar last year – The Crown. The success of the programme appeared certain as some categories featured several actors and actress vying for the same awards.
The Crown was named Best Television Series while Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin were named Best Actor and Best Actress for their performances as Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales. Olivia Coleman was also in the running for Best Actress for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II.
Gillian Anderson was also named Best Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or TV Film for her performance as Margaret Thatcher. Helena Bonham Carter had also been nominated for her role as Princess Margaret.
The show garnered significant local attention in late 2020 when the first episode of the Netflix series’ latest season focused on the assassination of Lord Mountbatten in Mullaghmore.
