Buccaneers adds to the Connacht Boys U-17 League Division One crown claimed earlier in the 2021-22 season. Backed by the venue’s infamous tricky wind, Sligo built up a 15-0 interval lead. Gerard Murtagh’s try, with outhalf Oisin O’Neill kicking the conversion, saw Sligo with an eight-point advantage.
Sligo’s pressure continued and a second try came when Max Hunter crossed the line after a move from a five-metre penalty.
The winners looked for further scores – Robert O’Kelly-Lynch and
Ronan O’Hehir impressed – and a penalty converted by Oisin O’Neill just before half-time extended the margin to 15 points.
Buccaneers, wind-assisted in the second-half, took the game to Sligo and with less than 10 minutes left they had made it a five-point game, 15-10, after a penalty and a converted try. Sligo, who defended admirably in the second period through the industry of Max Hunter, Ambrose Bamber and Malachi Cullen, added an insurance score late on when Oisin O’Neill kicked another penalty.
