AIB Tubbercurry taken to task for not having ramp outside their premises

-

THE only bank servicing customers in south Sligo and a large part of north Mayo has been slammed by local councillors for not having a ramp outside their premises to assist elderly customers and people with mobility issues.

The criticism was pointed at AIB whose branch in Tubbercurry presents a major problem to those with mobility issues as the concrete steps outside the bank pose a difficulty for many people. Three councillors have called on Sligo County Council to write to AIB Bank Tubbercurry to seek a ramp be put in place outside the main entrance of the bank building to assist elderly customers and people with mobility issues as the concrete steps in place at present outside the bank are causing a difficulty.

The Council have indicated they are in discussions with the AIB regarding this matter.

It is hoped that a solution can be found and that works can be concluded in 2023.

Cllr Martin Connolly said it is a disgrace that in 2023 he and other local representatives have had to raise the matter in the first place.

Speaking after the meeting where he and fellow councillors Paul Taylor and Dara Mulvey raised the issue, he said it was not acceptable that they had to raise this issue of wheelchair accessibility with a business like AIB.

AIB is the only bank servicing south Sligo and a considerable part of north Mayo and to think that people with a disability cannot access the bank is not acceptable, he said.

“We shouldn’t have to be fighting for these sorts of things in this day and age, they should be there, they should be provided, but it is positive to hear at our meeting that they are in talks with the local engineer and hope to provide something into the future,” he said. AIB say they plan to carry out upgrade works and provide a ramp.

The meeting of the Ballymote-Tubbercurry Municipal District heard the bank was located in a listed building.
