Well done to TY student Jayden Reynolds who received a certificat­e from ‘Sticks and Stones’ anti-bullying charity after he donated €120 of his transition year mini-company’s profit to the charity.

From January 12th - 14th, 10 students, split into 4 groups took part in the BT Young Scientist Exhibition in the RDS Arena in Dublin. James, Aodhan, Samuel, Matthew, Finn, Naoise, Patrick, Diarmait, Tom and Andrew put together presentati­ons on projects such as sun safety, concussion­s in sport, bacteria in water and how light affects our mood.

The Transition Year classes were busy and creative with the help of Stephen Murray from Inspirelan­d. BASKETBALL: On January 12, the Summerhill College basketball team took a great win of 67 to 37, which got them through to the final 16. FOOTBALL: Well done to the Under-17 football team who fought hard to win their Connacht quarterfin­al.

The team equalised the score (3-3) in the last minute to send the game to penalties.

Goalkeeper Paul McAteer made 2 amazing saves, allowing Cian Nicholson to score the winner in sudden death!

The

Summerhill Junior Cup team took a well deserved 15-12 win against a strong Marist of Athlone.

GAELIC: Congratula­tions to the Senior ‘A’ Gaelic team who took a great win versus Claregalwa­y of

3-07 to 1-11. The win put Summerhill to the top of the group, and we’re set to play Ballinrobe in the semi-final in February.

There was an open evening hosted on Thursday, January 19 for the first year class of 2023-24. There was great attendance on the evening.

Some of our transition year students made their way to Ocean FM to take part in a media, TV and radio course with help from Mark Halton. They got to script, rehearse and film their own Summerhill press release, before being invited into studio live on air with presenter Marty Probst.

Fifth year student Eli Rooney was selected for the National soccer team who took on Australia in an Under-18’s Internatio­nal School Friendly match. Eli and the team fought their way to a well-deserved 2-1 victory over Australia.

Our Senior Rugby team took an amazing win of 3424 against Garbally on Tuesday, January 24. Ronan O’Hehir and Sean Keane each scored a try, with Stefan Roche scoring two. Oisin O’Neill scored two penalties and all four conversion­s. The team’s amazing performanc­e secured them a place in the semi-finals.

ERASMUS: Summerhill teachers

Mr Brennan and Mr Keenan safely arrived at Ricardo Bernardo school in Santander, Spain ahead of this year’s Erasmus trip for some of the students from each school.

On January 25th, Summerhill held the first Grandparen­t’s Day Mass for 1st years since 2020. There were great numbers of people attending, making it a good day to remember.

Our transition year classes have completed the Social Enterprise Pilot Programme run by lecturer Ronan McArt from S Angelas College/ATU Sligo. Students had to solve the social problem of Sligo having the highest percentage of students coming to school by car. After many weeks completing the programme our students presented their solutions and were the overall winners.

Some of our transition year students enjoyed an accounting talk in ATU on January 25. Thanks to Caroline McNulty, Lecturer in Accounting, ATU, Catriona Barrett, TPM Global Operations Reagent Manager, Abbott, and Ann Marie Cogan, Sr. Lectures, External Examiner and Sr. Consultant ESD Consultanc­y for providing an insightful and engaging morning for the students.

On Thursday, January 26 the 2023 first year Diocesan Interschoo­ls quiz took place in the Summerhill library. The quiz was won by Summerhill for the third year running, with the winners trophy being presented by Bishop Doran.
