Senior ‘B’ Football C’ship St Attracta’s CS 2-8 St Muredach’s College 1-10 after Kyle McDonagh and Daithí Murphy set up Ciaran Gorman for a shot – put St Attracta’s three points clear, 1-2 to 0-2. And yet they were just a point ahead at the break, 1-4 to 0-6. Later on Joshua Flynn’s toil led to the attacker getting a shot at goal with 10 minutes of normal time left. The ball looked to be going in but substitute Conor McArdle made sure and now wind-assisted St Attracta’s had a four-point cushion, 2-6 to 0-8.

But they were later pinned back by St Muredach’s, who recovered to go narrowly in front, 1-10 to 2-6, by the 59th minute. Oisin Tighe’s goal was the score that lit the comeback fuse in this nip and tuck encounter. St Attracta’s only pointed twice in the last 14 minutes – centre-forward Michael Clifford equalised with a point free on the stroke of full-time and then Tommy Ross, a Connacht GAA Minor Football Championship winner with Sligo two years ago, popped up with the score that kept the possibility of silverware in sight. Matchwinner Tommy Ross played well, so too Eoghan Scanlon, team captain Conor Johnston, Aiden Marren, Stephen Donoghue, Joshua Flynn Ciaran Gorman.

Kyle McDonagh and Michael Clifford, better known as adept soccer players, displayed a prowess for Gaelic football. But this is a secondary school that celebrates all sports – that St Attracta’s team that were provincial runners-up five years ago featured Liam Kerrigan, who is now in Serie B
