Yama Hara praise for its CG finalists

Three members of Sligo’s Yama Hara Gymnastics Club – Emily Masterson, Laura McCabe and Luci Ward – were Community Games national finalists in Carlow on the weekend before last.

Emily Masterson, competing for north Sligo’s Cliffoney-Grange, won bronze at Girls U-13 level. She participat­ed in both the Floor and Vault discipline­s.

Laura McCabe, representi­ng Rosses Point, was fourth in the Girls U-11 Floor category. She also competed in the Girls U-11 Vault event. Drumcliffe’s Luci Ward was a competitor in the Girls U-9 Floor event.

“Well done to these girls for making it through area competitio­n and the county finals to get to the [national] finals,” said a statement from Yama Hara Gymnastics Club

“The standard of competitio­n at the national finals is extremely high and to take home medals at this level is a massive achievemen­t.”

Four up-and-coming Sligo teenager golfers on the Golf Ireland Underage High Performanc­e and Performanc­e Developmen­t coaching panels for 2023-24.

Maebh McLoughlin, from County Sligo Golf Club is on the Girls U-18 High Performanc­e panel along with 12 others. On the Performanc­e Developmen­t panel for the West region are County Sligo golfers John Paul Flanagan (Boys U-17) and Jessica Reynolds (Girls U-17), with Strandhill’s Patrick Tuffy in the Boys U-15 group.

Two fixtures reschedule­d for Bit O’Red

The dates of two of Sligo Rovers fixtures coming up next month in the SSE Airtricity League of Ireland Men’s Premier Division have been changed.

The Bit O’Red’s away game against St Patrick’s Athletic, due to take place on Friday, October 6, at Richmond

Park, has been put back until Monday, October 23, at the Inchicore venue (7.45pm kickoff). Rovers’ home clash with Dundalk, originally scheduled for Saturday, October 21, has been brought forward by 24 hours to Friday, October 20 (The Showground­s, 7.45pm start).

These changes are due to the schedule for the Sports Direct Men’s FAI Cup and Women’s FAI Cup semi-finals. Rovers will now have three Men’s Premier

RUGBY GROUP: The Sligo Rugby Club Girls U-18.5 squad that played their counterpar­ts from Enniskille­n RFC in a friendly game last weekend.

Division games in nine days as they will take on Dundalk (October 20), St Patrick’s Athletic (October 23) and Drogheda United (October 28).

An impressive win for Sligo’s second XV

The Sligo Rugby Club senior men’s second XV were

24-0 winners at home against Tuam’s second XV on Sunday last. This was a round two game in Pool ‘A’ of the Bank of Ireland Curley Cup.

Scoring tries at Hamilton Park were Andrew Ward (2), Ben Smyth and Adam Hunter, who was making his debut. The two conversion­s came from team captain Jacob Fleming and Sean Gilvarry. Tomorrow (Friday) night, Sligo are away to Galway’s Loughrea in round three of this provincial competitio­n.

Sligo surfers get Irish call for Rio gig

Three Sligo surfers – Tom Murphy, Oscar Choo and Darragh Gilmartin – have been named in the Irish Surfing team to represent Ireland at the ISA World Junior Surfing Championsh­ips that are taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from Friday, November 24 to Sunday, December 3.

The Sligo trio are members of Donegal Bay Boardrider­s Surf Club. Murphy will compete in the Boys U-18 Surf section, with Choo and Gilmartin both in the Boys U-16 Surf category. The Irish team features 12 surfers competing at U-16 and U-18 level. Along with the Sligo contingent there are athletes from Clare (6) and Waterford (3).

Co-ordinator) and the team’s three coaches are Ayesha Garvey, Iarom Madden and Una Britton.

“There is a wealth of talented young surfers in the water in Ireland today, with the standard higher than ever before,” said a statement from Irish Surfing.

“Attendance at the World Junior Surfing Championsh­ips provides Ireland’s top Junior surfers with the opportunit­y to compete against the world’s best up-and-coming surfing talent and presents a pathway to world-class and Olympic surfing.”

Clancy avoids the drop with Dromahair

Sligo man Padraig Clancy has guided St Patrick’s Dromahair to safety in the Leitrim GAA Senior Football Championsh­ip.

Clancy’s charges were five-point winners over Aughnashee­lin, 1-8 to 0-6, in the relegation semi-final last Saturday. Clancy was at the helm for St Patrick’s Dromahair’s Intermedia­te success in 2021.

Sligo LGFA to hold eight U-12 finals

The Sligo LGFA U-12 Academy of Football finals take place this weekend at Stenson Park (Cuilbeg) and Curry

GAA Club. There are eight finals scheduled and 13 clubs involved.

Clubs are reminded that there is no extra-time – if level at the end of normal time each finalist will share the trophy (for five months each).

The three deciders at St John’s GAA Club (Stenson Park) on Saturday are as follows: Bronze Cup final, St John’s Sky Blue v Tourlestra­ne (1.45pm); Bronze Shield final, Shamrock Gaels v Eoghan Rua (2pm); Diamond Cup final (Maurice Conboy Memorial Cup), Eoghan Rua v St John’s Navy (3.30pm).

Also on Saturday are three finals in south Sligo’s Curry – Silver Cup final, Drumcliffe-Rosses Point v Eastern Harps (3.30pm); Gold Shield final, CT Gaels v Geevagh-St Michael’s (4.45pm); Gold

Cup final, Curry v Calry-St Joseph’s (6pm).

Curry GAA Club hosts both of Sunday’s finals which are as follows: Silver Shield final, St Nathy’s 2 v Coolera-Strandhill (3.30pm); Diamond Shield final, St Nathy’s v St Mary’s (4.45pm).
