Sligo players win an LGFA HEC title

Sligo LGFA county players Claire Dunne (St Farnan’s) and Jade Lyons (Shamrock Gaels) helped DCU Dóchas Éireann win the LGFA HEC League Division One title on Wednesday of last week. Played at SETU Waterford, DCU Dóchas Éireann defeated UCC by 10 points, 1-8 to 0-1, in this O’Rourke Cup decider that was played in difficult weather conditions.

Kearns gets the chairperso­n’s role at Gaels

Andy Kearns is the new chairperso­n of Shamrock Gaels GAA Club. He succeeds Lauri Quinn, the former Connacht GAA president, who spent 10 years in this role with Shamrock Gaels. Kearns was elected at the club’s annual general meeting that took place on the Sunday before last. Club treasurer Mary Quinn outlined that the cost of running the senior (adult) section of the club for 2023 was €75,000. The weekly 50/50 draw and the members draw are the club’s primary sources of income.

The full list of officers helping to run Shamrock Gaels for 2024 are as follows: Seamus Cawley (president), Andy Kearns (chairperso­n), Glen McDermott (vice-chairperso­n), Paul Brennan (secretary), Niall Kearns (assistant secretary), Mary Quinn (treasurer and registrar), Nadine Barrett (assistant treasurer), Cormac Kearns (public relations officer), Róisín Kearns (assistant public relations officer), Sheona Leydon (assistant public relations officer), Michael Brennan (developmen­t officer), Catherine McMorrow (Irish language and cultural officer), Marina Swann (healthy club officer), David Quinn (insurance officer), Paul Higgins (coaching officer), Martha Byrne (children’s officer), Martin McMahon (designated liaison officer), Eugene Carroll (County Board delegate). Additional Executive Committee members include Emma Orr, Thomas Galvin, Michael Tonry, Gearoid O’Connor, Eddie Cogan, Andrew Hannon, Majella Muldowney, Ursula Lyons and Shane Quigley. Looking after Riverstown Park on behalf of the club are John Quinn, Michael Tuohy and Martin Baker.

Hansberry re-signs for 2024 season

Emma Hansberry has re-signed for the Sligo Rovers senior women’s team. The ex-Republic of Ireland senior women’s team internatio­nal, a stalwart midfielder, was this year’s captain.

Boasting a wealth of experience from the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division, news of the Sligo town native plans for 2024 was revealed by the club on Monday of this week – following on from last week’s announceme­nt that Hansberry’s team-mate, Leah Kelly, has also re-signed for next season.

Speaking to the club’s website, sligorover­s.com, Hansberry said: “I’m looking forward to working with the new management and the players that come in.

“We hope to build on what we’ve created over the last two seasons and have some more memorable days for Sligo Rovers.”

Norris, who also plays for Sligo Grammar School, slotted over the winning penalty. The hosts scored two tries as did the visitors. Last weekend’s result was Sligo’s fourth win from six games.

Sligo’s Darragh Cox is part of the GAA National Hurling Action Plan Workgroup. This workgroup, which held their first meeting earlier this month, is chaired by Colm Nolan of Maynooth GAA.

The purpose of the Hurling Developmen­t Plan Workgroup is to facilitate the formulatio­n of a three-year action plan to sustain and grow hurling in line with the overarchin­g vision and goals set out in the GAA Strategic Plan – Áontas 2022-2026.

Cox played his club hurling with Calry-St Joseph’s, winning

the Sligo GAA Senior Hurling Championsh­ip 11 times and four Connacht GAA Club Junior Hurling Championsh­ips, and was also joint-manager (along with Monaghan man Daithí Hand) of the Sligo senior hurling team that claimed the Nicky Rackard Cup at Croke Park in 2018. As an inter-county hurler, Cox was part of the Sligo senior panel that won the Nicky Rackard Cup in 2008. Cox is now a hurling Games Promotion Officer (GPO) employed by Connacht GAA and working in Sligo and Leitrim.
