SLIGO Rugby Club’s senior men’s team took a draw from their away encounter with Skerries last Saturday in round eight of this season’s Energia AllIreland League Division 2B.

In windy conditions on Dublin’s coast, Sligo appeared to be on course for their fifth win of the season as they established a 14-0 interval lead.

The wind-assisted visitors scored two tries in the first-half, through Philip Carter and Gary Duffy, with Euan Brown landing two conversions.

But the hosts recovered in the second period and bagged two converted tries to level proceedings.

Sligo will rue that Ethan Faitaua didn’t get through for what would have been a winning try in the last minute – his surge had try written all over it but the referee called play back. Gary Duffy, a key player for Sligo this season, sustained an ankle injury in this game.

This Saturday sees Sligo host their Connacht rivals Galway Corinthians (kick-off 2pm), with this round nine clash wrapping up the schedule before the Christmas break.

Corinthians are second in the table, just five points behind leaders Instonians.

The Galway side have won seven of their eight games so far. They’ve been ruthless when churning out victories, including last weekend’s 35-7 home win over Rainey Old Boys.

Their only loss was against Instonians who, even at the midway point of the season, are almost certain to get promoted. Sligo Rugby Club will officially open its new dressing-rooms at 11.45am and after the game there is the annual Christmas party in the clubhouse.
