Petrol cars still most popular in Sligo but drivers opt for electric cars in ever-growing numbers

NEW car registrati­ons in Sligo are up 8% on last year according to figures for 2023 released earlier this week by SIMI, while those registerin­g cars in Sligo are opting for automatic cars in big numbers - 640 compared to 476 manual transmissi­ons.

Nationally, the number of electric cars being registered is up now to a whopping 45 percent, in Sligo 32.89% opted for petrol, 25% for diesel and 18.2% for petrol/electric hybrids while 16.2% went for electric only.

In numbers, Sligo saw car registrati­ons increase to 1,116 in 2023, compared to 1,035 in 2022.

In Sligo just one car was registered in December 2023, 274 in January and 261 in July were the top figures month by month.

Yet again grey continues to be the most popular colour choice (410), black (196) is second, blue third on 180 while red/maroon and black are not hugely popular.

Skoda (145) pipped Hyundai (142) in terms of the most popular make in Sligo, Toyota beaten by one into third spot by Hyundai while Volkswagen (142) and Peugeot (93) complete the top five in terms of popular makes the Hyundai Tucson is the most popular model (58), the Skoda is next (42) and other Hyundai - the Kona (40) is third followed by the Kia Sportage (39) and the Volkswagen ID.4 in fifth (32).

Total new car registrati­ons for 2023, finished at 121,850 +16% on 2022 (105,398) and up 4% on 2019 (117,109) according to SIMI - The Society of the Irish Motor Industry.

New Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) registrati­ons in 2023 saw an increase of 25.1% (29,403) compared to 2022 (23,510) and a 16.1% increase on 2019 (25,336). New Heavy Commercial Vehicle registrati­ons (HGV) saw an increase of 20.4% (2,655) in comparison to 2022 (2,205) and 19.9% on 2019 (2,214). Imported Used Cars saw 50,716 registrati­ons in 2023, an increase of 9.09% on 2022 (46,490) and a decrease of 55.48% on 2019 (113,926).
