Tourlestra­ne go for Solan as their new boss

Former county champions Tourlestra­ne have appointed Mayo man Mike Solan as the club’s new senior Gaelic football team manager for 2024. Ballaghade­rreen native Solan, who takes over from Roscommon’s Fergal O’Donnell, was part of the Leitrim senior management team in 2022 and 2023 as assistant manager to boss Andy Moran.

Solan twice brought Mayo teams to GAA Football All-Ireland U-21 Championsh­ips finals (2016 and 2018), winning in 2016. He was previously in the running to be Mayo and when that vacancy arose in 2022 he went for the job, with his backroom team including Tourlestra­ne legend Eamonn O’Hara.

Castleconn­or’s Keeva Flynn is in the Republic of Ireland women’s U-17 squad for two upcoming internatio­nal friendlies in Portugal. Flynn, a defender who is part of the Sligo Rovers Academy, is among 22 players chosen by head coach James Scott for games against Korea Republic and Portugal. Flynn has already broken into the Rovers senior women’s team and played in last season’s SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division. Also in this Republic of Ireland teenage squad are players from Cork City, Galway United, Shelbourne, Shamrock Rovers, DLR Waves, Bohemians, Athlone Town, Treaty United and the USAbased SJEB Academy. The game against the Koreans takes place tomorrow, Friday (11am) and on Wednesday next, January 24, the Republic of Ireland take on Portugal. These friendlies are part of an eight-day training camp that will be based just outside Lisbon.

Holders have a semi-final in Bekan

Defending champions Summerhill College’s Connacht GAA Post Primary Schools Senior ‘A’ Football Championsh­ip semi-final is scheduled for Friday week, January 26, at the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence in Bekan. Summerhill’s opponents are St Gerald’s College (Castlebar), with matters getting under way at 7pm.

Rovers teens get the call for ROI U-15 squad

Two members of the Sligo Rovers Academy, defenders Ryan Cunningham and Aiden Gabbidon, have been selected in the Republic of Ireland men’s U-15 squad for an internatio­nal friendly against Australia in Dublin this Saturday. This is the first time that Cunningham and Gabbidon have been called up this age group. The Republic of Ireland head coach for this team is Jason Donohue. In last year’s U-15 fixture against Australia, the Republic of Ireland teens won 3-1.

Summerhill win a national basketball title

Summerhill College won the Basketball Ireland All-Ireland Schools Boys U-16 ‘B’

Cup yesterday, Wednesday, at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght. The Sligo town secondary school were seven-point winners over CBS Thurles, 33-26. Summerhill led at the end of the first period, 14-8, but found themselves two points down at half-time, 19-17.

A strong third period, during which the eventual champions outscored their opponents by eight points, 11-3, saw Summerhill take a six-point lead, 28-22, into the fourth period.

Brian Meehan and Micheál Harte each contribute­d nine points, with Meehan chosen as the game’s MVP (Most Valuable Player). Meanwhile, in yesterday’s Connacht Rugby Schools Senior ‘A’ Cup, Summerhill defeated holders Sligo Grammar School, 25-24, in a Pool ‘A’ fixture.

McDaniel helps Mercy College to final victory

Sligo town’s Mercy College are national champions following their success yesterday, Wednesday, in the Basketball Ireland All-Ireland Schools

Girls U-19 ‘C’ Cup final.

At the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght, the Mercy defeated Naas Community College from Kildare by 18H points, 44-26, with the brilliant Anna McDaniel scoring 31 points.

The Mercy were eight points ahead, 17-9, at the end of the opening period. They held a five-point interval advantage, 20-15, at the half-way stage.

They added a further 14 points in the third period and were 34-21 in front going into the fourth and final period. In the fourth period they added 10 points to their tally.

They were the second Sligo secondary school at the Tallaght venue this week along with Summerhill College.
