Sligo GAA clubs are encouraged to take part in the GAA’s Lá na gClub which is scheduled for Easter Bank Holiday Monday, April 1. In the coming weeks the GAA will unveil a special campaign to assist clubs and members of the public participat­e in Lá na gClub with the theme of ‘Join Us and Join In’. This

Ballymote handballer Cormac Finn reached the last 16 of the Southern Classic, an elite men’s handball 4-wall ranking event that took place at Mallow Handball Club, Co. Cork, on the weekend before last. Finn defeated Mallow’s Cian O’Driscoll in the last 32 but then lost to David Walsh (Mallow) in the next round. The tournament was won by Westmeath’s Robbie McCarthy

Castleconn­or teen Keeva Flynn featured for the Republic of Ireland women’s U-17 team in their recent internatio­nal friendlies in Portugal. The defender from west Sligo was one of 22 players chosen by head coach James Scott for an eight-day camp that included fixtures against South Korea and Portugal. Flynn, who has come through the Rovers academy to feature for the club’s senior women’s team, played the full game South Korea on January 19, a fixture that the Republic of Ireland won 2-1. Five days later the Irish teens beat Portugal 1-0 with a different starting XI used. These games were preparatio­n for next month’s UEFA European Women’s Under-17 Championsh­ip qualifiers. Also in the Republic of Ireland teenage squad for Portugal were players from Cork City, Galway United, Shelbourne, Shamrock Rovers, DLR Waves, Bohemians, Athlone Town, Treaty United and the USA-based SJEB Academy.

Connacht rugby is gathering its past players

Connacht Rugby has formed the Connacht Past Players Associatio­n (PPA), a new society that is open to any male or female who has represente­d Connacht Rugby at senior level at any point in the club’s 138-year history. This will ensure that over 1,000 eligible members will be kept updated about Connacht Rugby as well as being offered opportunit­ies to attend PPA events and get-togethers.
