Sligo rowers win medals indoors at UL

Sligo Rowing Club won six individual medals at the Irish Indoor Rowing Championsh­ips that took place on the Saturday before last, January 20, at the University of Limerick Sports Arena.

The Sligo Rowing Club medal winners in Limerick included Claire Walsh (silver and bronze), Euan Cradock (bronze), Emma Lineen (bronze), Sarah Walsh (bronze) and Caroline McGee (bronze).

Claire Walsh, competing in the Women’s Junior 14 age group, was third in the 500 metres race, clocking 1:45. She was second in the four minute event when pulling 1,073 metres. Sarah Walsh, who is Claire’s older sister, was a competitor in the Women’s Junior 18 2,000 metres race. She was third overall, with the well-known Acorn Cassidy (Enniskille­n Royal Boat Club) taking gold.

Euan Cradock won his silver in the Men’s Junior 13 three minute race. He clocked 812 metres in 180 seconds for second place. Emma Lineen’s bronze came in the Women’s Junior 16 2,000 metres challenge. Lineen completed this distance in 1:55.3.

Caroline McGee was third in the Women’s 30-39 2,000 metres race, registerin­g a time of 7:55.9.

ATU Sligo’s Freshers

Gaelic footballer­s are in action tonight, Thursday, in the HE GAA Freshers 1 Football Championsh­ip quarter-final – they are away to DCU Dóchas Éireann (DCU Sportsgrou­nds, 7.30pm). Managed by Coolera-Strandhill’s Conor McDonagh and Conor Lavin (Geevagh), ATU Sligo’s panel features an array of local talent, with players such as Conor Johnston (Coolaney-Mullinabre­ena), Cormac Dolan (Tourlestra­ne), Dillon Walsh (Owenmore Gaels), Dylan McLoughlin (Curry), Jaime Walsh (Coolera-Strandhill), James Donlon (Drumcliffe-Rosses Point), Mark Anderson (Owenmore Gaels), Mark McDaniel (Coolera-Strandhill), Peter Meehan (St John’s), Ryan McMorrow (Owenmore Gaels) and Shea O’Neill (St Mary’s). Drumcliffe-Rosses Point’s James Donlon and James Maheady (Crossmolin­a Deel Rovers, Mayo) are the team’s joint-captains. Aidan McConnon and Michael Harte are also part of the management team.
