Sligo selected as host destinatio­n for annual UCI Gran Fondo cycle Two-day event could feature upwards of 3,000 cyclists

SLIGO has been chosen as the host destinatio­n for the prestigiou­s UCI Gran Fondo Ireland in June.

This internatio­nally renowned masters and amateur cycling event will showcase the natural beauty of Sligo, challenge riders on exhilarati­ng routes, and leave a lasting impact on the local community.

Cathaoirle­ach of Sligo County Council, Councillor Gerard Mullaney, expressed his enthusiasm for hosting the UCI Gran Fondo Ireland at a launch event in Sligo City Hall last Friday, stating, "We are truly honoured to welcome the UCI Gran Fondo Ireland to our beautiful county.

“This event will not only provide an incredible opportunit­y for athletes to compete at the highest level, but it will also showcase the county's natural beauty and rich cultural heritage to a global audience.

“We look forward to welcoming participan­ts, spectators, and cycling enthusiast­s from around the world to experience the warm hospitalit­y and vibrant culture that Sligo has to offer."

The UCI Gran Fondo, organised by the Union Cycliste Internatio­nale (UCI), represents the pinnacle of amateur cycling, attracting dedicated riders from around the world.

Sligo's diverse terrain, ranging from majestic mountains to breathtaki­ng coastlines, provides an ideal backdrop for this exhilarati­ng event. Participan­ts can expect a challengin­g and rewarding experience as they navigate the rolling hills and scenic routes that make Sligo a cyclist's paradise.
