Cross-country gig sees good running from Sligo schools
SLIGO secondary schools were to the fore at the recent North Connacht Cross Country Championships that took place in Ballymote.
Originally scheduled for Thursday, January 18, this competition was later rescheduled for Tuesday, January 30.
The best of the Sligo competitors was Summerhill College’s Francis Donoghue, who won the Senior Boys race. Donoghue, who runs for South Sligo AC, won the Intermediate Boys title at last year’s 123.ie AllIreland Schools Cross Country Championships in Waterford.
There were a number of runners from Sligo schools who finished in the top 10 of their respective events.
In the Minor Girls race, there were four Sligo athletes in the top 10 – Ava Colreavy (Ursuline College), who was fourth, fifth-placed Holly Deehan (Jesus & Mary Secondary School, Enniscrone), Grange Post
Primary School’s Emma McAndrew, who was seventh, and Massie Kilcullen (Jesus & Mary Secondary School), who was placed eighth.
Mercy College student Lucie Cawley was third in the Junior Girls race, with Ava Hallinan (Jesus & Mary Secondary School) in 10th position.
Ursuline College’s Emma Carroll was seventh in the Intermediate Girls race. Three students from the Mercy College finished in the top 10 of the Senior Girls section – Lauren Maye (seventh), Kate McGauran (eighth) and Aine Harte (ninth).

NORTH CONNACHT SCHOOLS CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Held on Tuesday, January 30, in Ballymote. MINOR GIRLS seventh overall. Ross Campbell and Mark Sokhan, both of Summerhill College, were placed fifth and ninth respectively in the Junior Boys category.
Freddie Mitchell (St Mary’s College, Ballisodare) was ninth in the Intermediate Boys race and one place behind was Coláiste Iascaigh’s Dean Chapman.
In the Senior Boys race that Francis Donoghue won, there was also strong running from Darragh Mulrooney (Jesus & Mary Secondary School), Daniel Rattigan (Summerhill College) and Shay Davis (Grange Post Primary School). Mulrooney was fourth, Rattigan – a noted swimmer – took sixth place and Davis was placed eighth. Meanwhile, in the team categories, Sligo town’s Mercy College were placed first in the Senior Girls race. Teams from Jesus & Mary Secondary School were third in the Minor Girls and second in the Junior Girls.
The Ursuline College were third (Intermediate Girls) and fourth (Minor Girls). Teams from Summerhill College were also successful – their Intermediate Boys selection were second, with three of their four finishers in the top 20, while Summerhill had a team finishing third in the Minor Boys and Junior Boys races.
Grange Post Primary School from north Sligo were second in the team section of the Senior Boys race.
The Connacht Schools Cross Country Championships go ahead in Bushfield, Co. Galway, next Wednesday, February 21.
