Sligo marches in solidarity with Gaza and Palestine again this weekend
A MARCH to express solidarity with the people of Palestine and Gaza and calling for a permanent ceasefire will take place in Sligo on Saturday afternoon.
Participants will assemble at Connaughton Road car park at 3pm and march through the main streets to Sligo City Hall, where they will be addressed by a number of speakers.
The demonstration, which is being organised by the Sligo Palestine Solidarity Campaign is also calling for the Irish government to recognise the state of Palestine and to support South Africa’s case against Israel in the
International Court of Justice.
Calling on Sligo people to join in the march, Ms Aine Daly said: “Palestinians in Gaza are suffering dire deprivation and living hell with over 30,000 dead, two thirds of them women and children.
“Famine has now taken hold because Israel has denied access to adequate aid after the wholesale destruction of food infrastructure.
Most of the 2 million population are experiencing hunger, but one quarter are described as being one step away from starvation by the United Nations Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs
“This is not a war of defence against Hamas, it is an effort to collectively punish the people of Gaza. It is the ethnic cleansing of the people of Gaza. It is a genocide.
“The Irish government must now do everything in its power to influence Israel to stop committing genocide.
“This includes recognising the state of Palestine and joining South Africa with its case at the International Criminal Court,” she said.
