SLIGO RESULTS

TWELVE medals were secured by Sligo competitor­s at last weekend’s 123.ie National Juvenile Indoor Championsh­ips. These medals included four gold, four silver and four bronze at the TUS Internatio­nal Arena, Athlone.

Corran AC talent Ruby Cunnane won two gold medals – she dominated both the Girls U-14 60 metres and Girls U-14 60 metres Hurdles categories. Her winning time in the Girls U-14 60 metres final was 8.23 seconds and she clocked 9.44 seconds when finishing first in the Girls U-14 60 metres Hurdles decider. Cunnane was also fourth in the Girls U-14 Long Jump thanks to a jump of 4.71 metres which was a personal best.

Kelvin Kalu of Sligo AC was the fastest runner in the Boys U-16 60 metres final. He posted a time of 7.26 seconds for gold, an improvemen­t on his 7.38 seconds time that earned him first place in his heat and qualificat­ion for the decider.

Sligo AC’s Sean McCabe was the county’s fourth gold medallist at the midlands venue. He won the Boys U-19 Long Jump with an excellent leap of 6.51 metres. McCabe was also one of fourth bronze medal winners – his third place finish was in the Boys U-19 60 metres Hurdles final (8.82 seconds).

Grace Foley, Isabelle Sheridan and Kelvin Kalu – all from Sligo AC – and Riona Luse (South Sligo AC) were Sligo’s four silver medallists in Athlone. Foley’s silver came in the Girls U-12 600 metres, where she clocked the second-fastest time overall, 1:46.27, while Isabelle Sheridan was second in the Girls U-13 60 metres Hurdles final. Her time here was 9.99 seconds.

Kelvin Kalu, who won the Boys U-16 60 metres race, was placed second in the Boys U-16 Long Jump final thanks to a jump that was measured at 5.89 metres. Riona Luse’s medal was in the Girls U-17 Triple Jump final – her distance achieved was 10.47 metres.

The aforementi­oned Grace Foley, pictured right, had a busy weekend – along with her silver medal win in the Girls U-12 600 metres she was a finalist in the Girls U-12 60 metres and Girls U-12 Long Jump.

Two of Sligo’s four bronze medals went to Nicole Flanagan (Sligo AC), who was third in the Girls U-15 60 metres Hurdles final (9.47 seconds) and the Girls U-15 Long Jump (4.91 metres). Gearoid Tuohy, Sligo AC, claimed bronze in the Boys U-16 1500 metres event – he was second in heat two, clocking 4:19.41, and this was the third fastest time overall.

There were five fourth place finishers from Sligo – Ruby Cunnane (Corran AC), who also won two gold medals, Sean O’Dowd (North Sligo AC), Tom Rene-McEnroe (Sligo AC) and Cian Flynn (Corran AC).

Sean O’Dowd was fourth in the Boys U-14 High Jump, Tom Rene-McEnroe was fourth in the Boys U-16 60 metres hurdles final and Cian Flynn was fourth in the Boys U-19 Long Jump (a category won by Sligo AC’s Sean McCabe).
