‘Enough is enough’ – High Street traders want action on dangerous building
TRADERS on High Street in Sligo are said to have expected that action to either demolish or make safe a dangerous building on the street would have been taken by now, and because nothing has been done, they have had enough and want the matter resolved.
Cllr Declan Bree told a meeting of Sligo County Council that traders understood why the dangerous building had to be cordoned off which has caused traffic congestion and taken away valuable parking spaces along the street.
He said traders had contacted him to express their growing frustration regarding the bollards and metal fencing which was erected on the street leading to the subsequent reduction in car parking spaces which is having a very serious and negative impact on every commercial outlet in the street.
He said given the dangerous condition of No. 9 High Street, traders fully understand that Council staff were left with no option but to cordon the buildings off.
“However, they expected that action would have been taken by now to have the building either made safe or demolished.”
He said he and his council colleagues appreciated the efforts that had been made by Council staff to resolve the case, but there is a sense that the impasse has gone on long enough now:
“I and my colleagues in the
Borough District are very much aware of the significant efforts the Council’s engineering staff have taken to have this case resolved. And the business community are thankful for the updates provided to them by the engineers,” he said.
Traders feel they have waited long enough: “Traders are now asking that the Council take action, legal or otherwise, to have this matter resolved as a matter of urgency.
“The traders and indeed the people who use the street on a daily basis have been more than patient, but enough is enough.
“It is unacceptable for any individual or company to hold a street to ransom for such a length of time,” he said.
