THIS WAS a tough result for AbbVie, losers by two points to Limerick firm Regeneron in last Friday’s GAA Inter-Firms All-Ireland Intermediate Football Championship final at Kent Park.
AbbVie team manager Glenn Young admitted that the concession of two first-half goals as well as being five points down at the break, after playing with the breeze, set the tone for AbbVie’s eventual defeat.
He said: “It was very disappointing to be behind at half-time – it took us about 20 minutes to get into the game. We were always fighting an uphill battle but, in fairness to the lads, they knuckled down in the second-half.
“We couldn’t have asked for anymore from them in that second-half – but it is always disappointing when you get to this stage of a competition and you don’t win.
“It is a really enjoyable competition and AbbVie have been so supportive – the squad is made up of players from the AbbVie facilities in Sligo and Mayo.
“This gives them a terrific opportunity to play Gaelic football for AbbVie and they’ve really enjoyed the experience.
Well-known Sligo man Young, who is synonymous with GAA and soccer locally, is hopeful that AbbVie, provincial winners in their category, can go from strength to strength in the GAA inter-firms arena now that the competition is almost back to where to it was pre-Covid.
“It is nice to back in the competition and I think we can build on what we’ve done for next year. Hopefully more teams from Sligo will get involved.”
