This year I'm doing things a little bit differently. My family and I are spending Christmas at Club La Santa in Lanzarote — all the Olympians go there and train. I spent last Christmas there with just my sister and her boyfriend. For Christmas dinner we ate sushi by the pool. This year, the whole family is going — including my other sister, who lives in Toronto and who I haven't seen in two years. La Santa's basically a training resort. It has everything you can imagine; Olympic pools, an Iron Man course, so many different restaurants and mountains of food. All my family are really into athletics and it's a great opportunity for us all to be together, too.

I'd love a Christmas at home in Tipperary as I haven't been back in four months and it's the one time of year you usually get to spend at home. But my parents are always in the house, so it's nice for them to get away and I'll be happy to see them happy. Plus I'll get a tan over Christmas.

A normal Christmas would be me arriving home on Christmas Eve and the house would be all Christmassy. The trees outside would have lights on them and Dad would be busy with all the cooking. On Christmas Day, all of our aunts and cousins come over and we have a big dinner in the conservatory. There are big roaring fires in all the fireplaces around the house and Christmas movies on in all the rooms so people can move around. People usually stay up all night.
