United Ireland is a goal within reach
Sir — Eilis O’Hanlon (Sunday Independent, July 24) treads very near to the cynical end of the political spectrum when she tells all of us who believe in a united Ireland, including the Taoiseach and the leader of the Opposition, that we should not see Brexit as an opportunity to achieve what will amount to a lifelong political goal.
For many people who seek leadership from the country’s senior politicians at this time of uncertainty, a united Ireland will be possible. In fact, with the best will and determination applied to their actions, a united Ireland becomes probable. There has never been a better time for seeking fundamental change on this island than now.
No issue should get in the way of a popular vote to unite this country.
No one should rule out the enormity of the possibilities created by the Brexit, a time when the British made an irrational decision by choosing an inferior economic path.
They have left themselves and the Brexit-supporting Unionists vulnerable to accusations that they chose the wrong path for the North’s more positive leaders.
All the economic arguments now have an answer, including the argument about servicing the North’s budget deficit that will need to be made up.
In the short to medium term, the British will have to take up the slack, until we get to a time when the North’s finances are in a better state.
A united Ireland supported by a majority, including many Unionists, is a goal within reach with the leadership of sensible politicians, North and South. John O’Connell Derry
