‘I’ve learned to appreciate everything I have — and not take things for granted’

SCOTT Evans recently returned home from the Olympic Games in Rio — where he became the first Irish man to win an Olympic badminton match. The athlete, who is known to whip off his top when celebrating a win, finished ninth place in badminton in the Olympics last month.

In 2008, Evans became the first Irishman ever to compete in badminton at Olympic level — when he took part in the Beijing Summer Olympics. He will celebrate his 29th birthday later this month. He is currently living and training in Denmark. What is the most important lesson about money which your career as a professional badminton player has taught you? I have learnt to appreciate everything I have and not take anything for granted. What’s the most expensive country you have ever competed in? I have competed all over the world but would have to say that Norway is the most expensive. What’s the most expensive item of sports gear you own — and how much did it cost? The most expensive piece of equipment I have is my Babolat racket, which costs around €135. Are you better off than your parents? No. Apart from property, what’s the most expensive thing you have ever bought? I bought a car once which I have now sold. I have started to lease cars instead. I do not own any property. What was your worst job? I worked in a warehouse once — but I quickly found out that it was a dreadful idea for my badminton, as I was walking around the place non-stop and carrying heavy items. My body was in bits after it and I found it difficult training after the job. So that job didn’t last long. What was your best financial killing? Coming runner-up in the Bitburger Badminton Open Grand Prix Gold. The prize money was US$4,000. Do you use any money-saving apps? No. What was your biggest financial mistake? Buying a car. Android or iPhone? iPhone. Do you know how much is in your current account? It depends on the time of year — due to how my sports funding (which helps pay my rent, food, training, treatment for the year) is paid out. Have you ever made an insurance claim? Yes. On my car. Have you ever switched utility provider? No. iTunes or Spotify? Spotify. What was the last thing you bought online? I always buy books online so probably a book. Do you have a mortgage? Fixed or tracker? I don’t have a mortgage. Would you buy Irish property now? Why? I don’t think I would buy now because I feel the housing market has already risen a lot. If I was to buy, I would look for a property that needed a full renovation. Cash or card? Card. Do you ever haggle? Yes but only in Asia. I think I am very good at it!
