-

Have the right papers to hand to ensure everything runs smoothly when filing your tax return. Here are some of the

main ones you’ll need. return and self-employed; Form 12 if you are a PAYE worker with non-PAYE income. You won’t need any paper tax form if filing your return online but you must register with Revenue Online Service (ROS) and it could take up to two weeks to do so. Your P60 for 2015 if you are a PAYE worker with non-PAYE income. Should your PAYE employment have ceased in 2015, you will need your P45. Both documents will tell you your gross PAYE earnings for 2015, as well as the amount of PAYE tax paid — and any sick pay received. (These details must be declared in your tax return). You will also need your spouse’s P60 if you are jointly assessed for tax purposes. A statement of earnings (outlining how much you earned in 2015) if you are a self-employed professional. You will also need a set of accounts nearby for details of any sales, purchases, lighting and heating bills, expenses, and so on. Bank statements for any savings held in 2015 — as well as those of your spouse (if jointly assessed). You must declare any interest earned on your savings in your tax return — even if you have already paid DIRT on it.

Landlords will need bank statements or rent books for details of rent paid in 2015. To tot up the expenses that can be written off their tax bill, the following paperwork should also be to hand: receipts for repair or maintenance jobs and for anything bought to kit out the property for tenants, invoices from a letting agent (if one has been hired), receipts for home and mortgage protection insurance on the rented property and a bank statement clarifying how much mortgage interest was paid on the mortgage for the rented property.
