GLITZ AND GLAM IFTA Gala Television Awards 2016 TV3, 10pm

One of the most glamorous nights on the Irish entertainm­ent calendar — the Irish Academy’s annual IFTA Gala Television Awards honours the best in Irish TV over the past year. 50 Ways to Kill Your Mammy, Brendan O’Connor’s Cutting Edge, The Imelda May Show and The Seven O’Clock Show compete in the entertainm­ent category, while Fair City, Red Rock and Ros na Run battle for Best Irish Soap, and veteran broadcaste­r Pat Kenny is the recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievemen­t Award.

POP SENSATIONS The X Factor, TV3, 8pm

Week by week, the judges trim the deadweight from the competitio­n and potential winners begin to stand out. Here, Dermot O’Leary presents the first live results show of the year as the hopefuls aim to avoid the ignominy of being the first contestant booted off by the public. The results of votes are revealed, with the two acts singing for their lives.
