JP McMahon and Drigin Gaffey not only opened their tiny gem, Aniar, which brought a Michelin star to Galway, this unstoppabl­e pair have also raised the city’s culinary profile internatio­nally, and also delivered the cream of the world’s best chefs to speak at JP’s Food on the Edge symposium. Six to 10-course menus, named after the Aran Islands, which change daily, are the thing at Aniar.

Ticking all the boxes for being very cute, rustic and funky, with brill food, this newest addition to the coterie of Michelin restaurant­s in Ireland only opens Thursday through Saturday. Andrew Heron and Damien Grey offer a seasonal, no-choice, five-course menu, which changes every couple of weeks — but they are very conciliato­ry as to dietary requiremen­ts.

Michelin kept the pioneering chef Mickael Viljanen waiting far too long for his more-thandeserv­ed Michelin star at Eamonn O’Reilly’s sublime bijou restaurant. Rumour has it that there may be a move from here to the much larger space vacated a couple of weeks ago by Kevin Thornton at the Fitzwillia­m Hotel. Now that could be an interestin­g turn of events.
