Recruiters turn to data mining to find best employees

- Louise Kelly

RECRUITMENT professionals are using increasingly more complex data mining tools to source and determine the most suitable potential employees for their company.

Small subsets of HR executives in Ireland are already leveraging this online information as they aim to build the desired workforce.

“By nature of the fact that we have a massive amount of data at our fingertips, I get to work with a data scientist on my team and I can use that data to create insights and programs for the betterment of the company — that’s quite unique,” LinkedIn’s EMEA HR chief Wendy Murphy said.

“When I talk to other HR professionals in the industry they say that they wish they had that data. When we think about the future of work and for the talent professionals it’s all about data, it’s about leveraging that data.”

The social networking firm announced last November that it was adding 200 new staff to its 1,000-strong workforce at its Dublin base.

LinkedIn uses its Irish hub as the company’s European headquarters and is constructing a new building, adjacent to the Grand Canal.

The recruitment drive is therefore very much active and – while acknowledging restrictions around data privacy – Murphy reveals that a number of “purpose-led professionals” are sought using the tools at their disposal.

“These are people who want to make a social and larger scale contribution to the world,” she said.

“There are indicators out that can highlight that in the hunt for a candidate; there are lots of statistics to tell us that these employees are more productive, more satisfied and ultimately bring more money to the bottom line.”

But even those that aren’t successful in joining the LinkedIn team will have an enjoyable time during the recruitment process, said Murphy.

“Every program we have in place is about making sure that the person going through this had the best time that they could have – including people that don’t get the job,” she said.

“We measure the success bar of those candidates who don’t get jobs at LinkedIn to make sure they have a good experience – they could be a potential candidate down the line but ultimately they’re a LinkedIn member.”
