Maigret’s Night At The Crossroads ITV Hub, until May 16, season two, episode one

Another feature-length mystery, the third in this particular incarnation of the French detective, played by Rowan Atkinson, who is clearly so determined to leave all Mr Bean-ish-ness behind him that he barely moves a facial muscle throughout the 180 minutes. Here, he is investigating the murder of a Jewish diamond dealer, killed at night in a remote village, whose inhabitants are reluctant to talk to him about anything at all. The body is found in the garage of a monosyllabic Danish recluse (Tom Wlaschiha) who lives with his sister (Mia Jexen), with whom he has a definitely peculiar relationship, and Maigret’s colleague, Inspector Grandjean (Kevin R McNally) is determined to fit him up for the killing. The atmosphere and style of this stand-alone episode are both compelling — the 1950s recreated via smoky police rooms and the faded grandeur of half-abandoned mansions, along with a few gorgeous cars and some wonderful hats. The only pity is that the rural setting robs us of the Paris scenes of the two previous episodes. These were actually filmed in Budapest, but the results were splendid.

Gotham RTE Player, until May 10, season three, episode one

Definitely silly, but equally definitely good fun, Gotham is back, with its collection of misfits, monstrous villains and wannabe super-heroes. A young Bruce Wayne is hunting his parent’s murderers, Penguin, The Riddler and Fish Mooney (played by Jada Pinkett Smith) are still carving up the city between them, and in-fighting as much as they are out-fighting. In pursuit are detective James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) — later to become the legendary Commissioner Gordon — with veteran detective Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue), a man conflicted in both intent and execution of his job, and various superheroes. Gotham, itself, is stylish and menacing, a place where anything can happen and everyone is ambiguous.
