ESB ecars runs and maintains the 1,200 public electric vehicle charging infrastruc­ture dotted around the country. As well as a map of where they are, it also has informatio­n on how you can get a free home charging point when you buy an EV.

IRISHEVOWN­ERS.IE

This is the website of the Irish EV Owners Associatio­n, which represents EV owners in Ireland. It also has a popular forum as well as a Facebook page, with up to 800 EV owners registered. It’s a good source of friendly advice and insider knowledge of living with EVs.

SEAI.IE

The SEAI provides a grant of €5,000 towards the purchase of electric cars, whether it is a pure BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) or a PHEV (plug-in hybrid). As well as the grants, its website contains informatio­n on all aspects of owning and running an EV.

This is a popular UK website with informatio­n aimed at helping you find the most economical and environmen­tally-friendly car, including electric cars. Most of the cars listed are available in Ireland.

GREENAER.IE

If you like your electric cars to be small and cheap, then you could check out the Reva, distribute­d here by Greenaer. It costs just €11,500, making it the cheapest fully-automatic electric car in Ireland. Top speed is 75km/h and it has a range of 80km.

This is Tesla’s Irish website. The company behind what are probably the most sought-after premium electric cars — the Model S and Model X — opened its Irish dealership last week. You’ll need deep pockets, though.

EVs qualify for VRT relief, so if you are thinking of importing a used EV from Britain, you should check what the likely VRT payable — if any — would be.

MOTORCHECK.IE

This car history checking website has a section on electric cars in its blog section, including a used car buying guide to the Nissan Leaf, the most popular EV in Ireland by some distance.

SPEAKEV.COM

Similar to the Irish EV Owners Associatio­n, this is a well-known British EV enthusiast forum.
