‘I traded a pound coin for 20p — I learned fast!’

-

CAITLIN Nic Aoidh, from Falcarragh in Co Donegal, is one of TG4’s weather presenters.

The well-known Gaeilgeoir is also the presenter of the new series of Féilte, which kicks off this Thursday at 8:30pm on TG4.

Nic Aoidh, who worked as a secondary school teacher before joining TG4, is now living in Galway.

She made international headlines last year when she pulled off a Halloween trick on live TV.

The weather presenter was mid-forecast when she was struck by a fake flash of lightning and then disappeared from the screen.

Féilte showcases various events around the Gaeltacht areas throughout the summer and this year’s focus will be on musicians.

What’s the most important lesson about money which your career as a broadcaster has taught you? That I have to be relatively careful with money as it’s a feast or famine in this industry.

What’s the most expensive place you have ever visited? Dubai and Vienna have expensive hotels. I don’t think they’re much more expensive than Dublin hotels though.

What’s your favourite Irish coin? The old 20 pence coin with the horse on it. When I was a child, my brother convinced me it was worth more than the silver pound with the deer.

I traded a pound coin for 20 pence when I didn’t understand money. I learned fast!

Are you better off than your parents? I don’t think they would appreciate me comparing bank statements!

Apart from property, what’s the most expensive thing you have ever bought? The car that I have now — which could do with an upgrade. It’s a Vauxhall Astra. Though, come to think of it, I probably spent more on college fees than I did on the car.

What was your worst job? Turning turf on the bog. The job is very bad for the nail beds and the back — but it’s lovely to see all the turf stacked up and ready for the winter.

What was your biggest financial mistake? Probably a car that gave an awful lot of trouble.

What was your best financial killing? A €3 Winning Streak scratch card which landed me on the TV game show about six years ago. I was very lucky — I won a car on the show.

What’s your favourite saying about money? Neither a borrower nor a lender be.

Android or iPhone? Definitely Android. I love the picture quality of Android. However, I don’t like the poor battery life of the phone.

Have you ever made an insurance claim? Thankfully, no.

iTunes or Spotify? Spotify. I love all types of music and my Spotify has lots of music on it.

What was the last thing you bought online? A silk dress from Warehouse.

Do you have a mortgage? I don’t have a mortgage. I’m renting in Galway.

Would you buy Irish property now? Not at the minute, but if the ideal home came up I would consider it.

Cash or card? Card. I rarely carry cash as cards are so convenient.

Do you ever haggle? Yes. The best deal I ever got haggling was when I haggled for a leather handbag in Rome and got it for €40.
