Corbett murder trial begins tomorrow
Molly Martens, the wife of slain Limerick man Jason Corbett, will go on trial in the US alongside her father Thomas Martens tomorrow. The pair are accused of second-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter at the Corbett home in Carolina on August 2, 2015.
Mr Martens has alleged that he was disturbed after hearing Mr Corbett arguing with Ms Martens. He said he interrupted a row to find his daughter being choked by her husband and acted in self-defence.
Winning numbers in €2.9m lotto jackpot
There was no winner of last night’s €2,955,187 Lotto jackpot. Numbers were 5, 10, 18, 23, 36, 46 (bonus 40). Plus One were 9, 12, 30, 31, 35, 42 (bonus 1) and Plus Two were 7, 12, 22, 34, 40, 44 (bonus 41). The raffle drew 5790.
Markiewicz exhibit opens in Lissadell
A special exhibition in Lissadell House, Sligo, to mark the 90th anniversary of the death of Countess Constance Markiewicz was opened yesterday by Maire Geoghegan Quinn — the first female Cabinet minister in Ireland since the Countess herself. The ceremony featured readings of pieces written by Markiewicz. Sabina Higgins laid a wreath in Glasnevin where Markiewicz is buried.
Fermanagh footballers saved by surfers
A group of Fermanagh GAA minor footballers got into difficulty at Tullan near Bundoran, Co Donegal, yesterday, when they were pulled out to sea by a rip current.
The Bundoran RNLI lifeboat and the R118 helicopter attended — along with a group of surfers, who entered the water on boards to help the footballers to safety.
If caught in a rip, stay calm and swim parallel to the beach until free of the rip, then make for shore.
Businessman leaves €14m in will
Gabriel ‘Gay’ Brennan of Nutgrove Park, Clonskeagh, a company director with an investment holding company, has left €14,512,252 in his will.
