TDs to vote on new ‘right to die’

- Philip Ryan

TDS will be asked to vote on legislation which would legalise assisted suicide.

The ‘right to die’ legislation would allow terminally ill people to end their own lives.

People Before Profit TD Gino Kenny will submit the ‘Dying with Dignity’ legisla- tion as a private member’s bill on behalf of Independent Alliance Minister of State John Halligan. Mr Halligan cannot propose private member’s bills as he is junior minister.

Last night, Fianna Fail revealed the party would allow TDs to vote with their conscience when the bill is debated in the Dail.

“This will be treated as a matter of conscience by the Fianna Fail parliamentary party,” a spokesman said.

The Labour Party said endof-life issues should be considered by the Citizens Assembly, but the parliamentary party would consider their position on the bill when it is published and comes before the Dail.
