DUTY-FREE is big business for the spirits industry and Irish whiskey is a favoured tipple with travellers these days as the buzz about it shows little sign of wearing off. In June of this year, Teeling Whiskey sold a minority stake in the business to Bacardi, a family-owned firm and huge player in the international drinks business.
Last week Bacardi Global Travel Retail said three versions of Teeling Irish Whiskey, which was set up in 2012 by Irish entrepreneur Jack Teeling, would be rolled out at TFWA Cannes, an exhibition held by the world’s biggest duty-free and travel retail association.
The ‘Trinity’ range consists of Small Batch, Single Grain, and Single Malt. Aside from Ireland and the US, Bacardi also sees opportunities in France, Germany, and Nordic region. Bacardi Global Travel Retail managing director Mike Birch said he expected that range to appeal to ‘progressively minded whiskey appreciators’. I can only imagine what the Irish whiskey drinkers of old would make of that description.
