I’M SORRY DONAL OG’S LETTER FOR TOM HUMPHRIES

- Niamh Horan

FORMER hurling star Donal Og Cusack has issued a public apology for writing a character reference in support of convicted sex offender Tom Humphries.

Former Irish Times sports writer Humphries admitted last March that he had groomed a girl from she was 14 years old and sexually abusing her.

Controversy erupted earlier this month when Dublin Circuit Criminal Court was made aware of two character references supportive of the former journalist.

These were written by the former Cork inter-county star and by Sunday Times sports writer David Walsh.

Mr Cusack had not been identified publicly as the author of one of the letters until he issued a statement last night.

“I am the sportsman referenced as having written a character reference in the Tom Humphries case,” he said in a statement on his official Twitter account.

“I absolutely condemn the crimes he has committed. I cannot begin to imagine the terrible suffering of the victim.

“I apologise for any hurt or offence caused by my action. My intention was to help a human in a dark place who asked me for help.

“I showed a lack of judgment in this situation for which I am genuinely sorry.

“I will not be making any further comment and wish to let justice take its course,” he said.

Mr Cusack, who came out as being gay during his illustrious playing career with the Cork hurlers, is currently part of the backroom team of the Clare senior squad.
