‘Sunday Independen­t’ writers short-listed for journalism awards

THE Sunday Independen­t’s team of journalist­s has been recognised for excellence, with a host of our writers short-listed across a range of categories in the annual NewsBrands Journalism Awards.

There were nomination­s in the broadsheet features section and the investigat­ive journalism category for Maeve Sheehan.

She was recognised for her outstandin­g coverage of the Tuam mother and baby home scandal, the Rescue 116 helicopter tragedy, and the unsolved murder of Grace Livingston­e.

Her investigat­ion into the cost of care in nursing homes was also short-listed.

Political Correspond­ent Philip Ryan has been rewarded with two nomination­s for his work. His story uncovering the mismanagem­ent of public funds by the Garda Training College is listed in the crime story of the year category.

He was also nominated for political story of the year for his story about a battle between Fianna Fail and Fine Gael over increasing the State pension by €5.

Sunday Independen­t Busi- ness Editor Samantha McCaughren is in the running for business story of the year, with her revelation about AIB telling possible investors it will not pay tax for 30 years.

Sunday Independen­t Sports Editor John Greene has been nominated for sports story of the year for his exclusive report on Kerry footballer Brendan O’Sullivan failing a routine drugs test.

Widely respected writer and commentato­r Gene Kerrigan has again been short-listed in the broadsheet columnist category.

The Sunday Independen­t nomination­s are among a series for journalist­s at Independen­t News & Media at our sister titles the Irish Independen­t, The Herald, Sunday World and Independen­t.ie.
