‘Sunday Independent’ writers short-listed for journalism awards
THE Sunday Independent’s team of journalists has been recognised for excellence, with a host of our writers short-listed across a range of categories in the annual NewsBrands Journalism Awards.
There were nominations in the broadsheet features section and the investigative journalism category for Maeve Sheehan.
She was recognised for her outstanding coverage of the Tuam mother and baby home scandal, the Rescue 116 helicopter tragedy, and the unsolved murder of Grace Livingstone.
Her investigation into the cost of care in nursing homes was also short-listed.
Political Correspondent Philip Ryan has been rewarded with two nominations for his work. His story uncovering the mismanagement of public funds by the Garda Training College is listed in the crime story of the year category.
He was also nominated for political story of the year for his story about a battle between Fianna Fail and Fine Gael over increasing the State pension by €5.
Sunday Independent Busi- ness Editor Samantha McCaughren is in the running for business story of the year, with her revelation about AIB telling possible investors it will not pay tax for 30 years.
Sunday Independent Sports Editor John Greene has been nominated for sports story of the year for his exclusive report on Kerry footballer Brendan O’Sullivan failing a routine drugs test.
Widely respected writer and commentator Gene Kerrigan has again been short-listed in the broadsheet columnist category.
