IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...
Shetland RTE Player, until December 6, Season 1, episodes 1-5 Adopting many of the sensibilities of Scandi-Noir drama — namely bleak locations, undemonstrative interactions and a certain laconic style of human interaction — Shetland is set within a close-knit island community, the kind of place that can seem idyllic, until you look a little harder.
This won a Bafta for Best Drama in 2016, and is now well into its third series, with a fourth on the way, but here, RTE are starting from the beginning again with a chance to catch up with DI Jimmy Perez (played by Douglas Henshall left, who also won a Bafta for his performance) and his team. Loosely based on the novels by Ann Cleeves, Shetland is an old-fashioned murder mystery (and all the better for that), with plenty of suspense and convincing characterisation. The action begins when an elderly islander is brutally murdered, and the Scottish press descend on the island. Jamie And Jimmy’s Friday Night Feast Channel4.com, until December 24, Series 5, episode 1 Jamie Oliver and his best mate Jimmy Doherty are back, with their cafe at the end of Southend pier. New celebrities — episode 1 sees actor Simon Pegg try to recreate a particularly delicious lamb tagine — new audience (just as enthusiastic and gorgeous as ever, though), new recipes (Jamie’s Provencal pancakes), and a new food fight.
This time, it’s the duck industry that has caught their attention, and in particular the kinds of conditions in which these birds are often reared. Why, ask the best mates-turned-food activists, can’t more ducks be raised free-range in the same way that chickens increasingly are? It’s an excellent question. Would you pay more for free-range duck, they ask their audience? Of course, they would; so long as Jamie Oliver is asking, they’ll pretty much say yes to anything! As always, this is jolly and lively, with a few good recipes and some thoughtful but easy-to-grasp reflections on the modern food industry thrown in.
