The Night Manager

RTE Player, until December 19 For those who missed the BBC’s very successful adaptation of John le Carre’s book when it was broadcast in 2016, or indeed for anyone who wants a second look at it, The Night Manager is now showing on RTE Player. Tom Hiddleston (left) is a 007-double as Jonathan Pine, night manager of the very fancy Nefertiti Hotel in Cairo. Blond, handsome, charming, he has nerves of steel and ice in his veins. Roper takes a shine to Pine, which brings the latter to the attention of the relentless Angela Birr (Olivia Colman), head of an obscure British intelligence agency that operates alongside MI6, who is determined to take Roper down. At Birr’s request, and motivated by revenge for the dead beauty, Pine joins Roper’s crew — led by a brilliant Tom Hollander as Corky — and starts to track secrets. If you can stomach it, this starts with the 1980s, when The Donald went against his father’s advice and jumped into the casino business, buying first a yacht, then an airline and then an American football team, at which point his life started to unravel. Then came the 1990s, the divorce settlement from Ivana, and the approach of bankruptcy. Except, of course, Trump turned his business life around, published The Art Of The Comeback, married Melania, starred in The Apprentice, took to Twitter, and set his sights on the White House...
