- EMILY HOURICAN

Vikings RTE Player, until February 1; season 5, episodes 1-6 Now into its fifth season and as popular as ever, Vikings still has plenty of fighting, feuding and intriguing to keep things interesting, although here the action has shifted from Viking chieftain Ragnar Lothbrok to his sons, as they avenge their father’s death, fight amongst themselves, and continue to make inroads into the heart of England. The Great Heathen Army is moving to take York, pillaging along the way. With King Aethelwulf and his family still in hiding, warrior bishop Heahmund — played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers — is left to try and rally the Saxons to defend the realm. Katheryn Winnick (left) is back as Ragnar’s ex-wife, Queen Lagertha, with John Kavanagh as The Seer of Kattegat and Bosco Hogan making an appearance as Lord Abbot of Lindisfarne. Elijah Rowen, son of artist Guggi, plays Asbjorn, a young man who joins the expedition. Derry Girls Channel4.com, episodes 1-4 Response to this comedy drama set in an all-girls’ school during The Troubles in Derry, and written by Lisa McGee (she wrote Raw for RTE, Being Human for the BBC, and London Irish for Channel 4), has been wildly enthusiastic so far.

Against a backdrop of bombs and road closures, a group of 16-year-old girls at a convent school try to navigate the many pitfalls of adolescence. Erin, her cousin Orla and their friends Clare and Michelle are getting through life as best they can, when Michelle’s English, and male cousin, James is sent to live with her, and attend the same school. And that’s just the start in terms of unexpected events.

Ian McElhinney plays Granda Joe, with Tommy Tiernan as Da Gerry and Siobhan McSweeney as Sister Michael. The lead actors all look somewhat older than their 16 years, but there is plenty that is funny and touching here.
