Charming in Carraroe

BOHERBEE COTTAGE, CARRAROE, CO GALWAY €230,000

-

BOHERBEE Cottage is thought to date from 300 years ago and is about as quaint a thatched cottage as you could hope to find.

In recent years, it has been extended and modernised.

The cottage sits on a two-and-a-half acre site bounded by stone walls, with trees to the front and gardens to the rear. There are magnificent views of the sea to the front and Lough Natawnymore to the rear.

The cottage has 106sqm of living space, made up of an entrance hall, guest lavatory, shower room, kitchen and a living room/dining room that retains the original open fireplace. There are three bedrooms, and the master is en suite.

Boherbee lies a short distance from the village of Carraroe, in the heart of the Connemara Gaeltacht, which has shops, restaurants and pubs, and is home to Raidió na Gaeltachta and TG4.

The village is famous as the home of the traditional fishing boat, the Galway Hooker, and every August bank holiday, Carraroe hosts Feile an Doilin, the largest Galway hooker festival in Ireland, and one of the largest maritime festivals in the country. The main boats are the Baid Mhora (big boats) and Leath Bhaid (half-boats), which in earlier times were used for hauling turf from the peat bogs in Connemara to the Aran Islands and the Burren. The smaller boats are the Gleoiteoga, traditionally used for fishing. These boats can be found at Sruthan Pier, which is the main pier in Carraroe and from where there are panoramic views of the Twelve Bens mountains. Today, the boats are used for racing.

There are numerous safe beaches in the area, including the famous Coral Beach, a biogenic gravel beach that is actually formed from coralline algae.
