Now, listen here Paddy

- PAT FITZPATRICK

These days it’s all about the British establishment. We had the royal wedding, which was Hello! magazine turned into a two hour TV show. But the real action was in the Daily Telegraph.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, some people’s idea of the next prime minister, wrote a piece in that paper which should have been titled ‘Now listen here, Paddy’. To the untrained eye, this was a polite and reasoned piece, warning Dublin against asking for too much in the Brexit negotiations. To us ‘Oirish’ however, schooled in the 800 years of oppression tradition, it was patronising and dripping with contempt.

We only hope Jacob keeps this stuff coming, because rage is the life-blood of the true Gael, and it’s been in short enough supply recently, what with the booming economy. The only threat is that Britain will stop taking orders from people with rich parents. Luckily there is no sign of this on the horizon. So we can continue to get riled up by Jacob, the toff that keeps on giving.
