Port faces a storm next year
÷ BRITAIN could be pitted against one of its oldest allies in history — Portugal — following Brexit. The UK is among the world’s biggest consumers of port, often made by families with British heritage.
The UK could apply new labelling requirements or raise taxes on alcohol as part of “retaliation” in an acrimonious split with the EU, port-producers fear. And while the EU protects port as it does champagne in France — only port produced in Portugal can be labelled as such — the worry is whether it will continue to enjoy that protection in the UK after Brexit.
