Our microbiomes weigh about 1.5kg, containing more bacteria than there are cells in our body. “A lot of our behaviour,” says Ted Dinan, “is controlled at a subconscious level by our microbiota. I have a sweet tooth, and often wonder is it my brain telling me I want that apple pie or is it my microbes, who must have a way of maintaining their existence.”
