EACH summer thousands of chess fans combine their holidays with playing in tournament­s. You can play chess by the sea in countries such as Greece, Spain, Italy and France, or opt for big cities like London, Berlin or Prague.

Whatever the location, those chess fans look to win prizes, improve their ratings, get titles and test themselves over the board with chess profession­als. Sometimes such encounters produce really good games, as happened in the following game from an open tournament in Philadelph­ia.
