Aldi to move 49 jobs from Cork to Naas and UK headquarters in tech revamp

- Samantha McCaughren

GERMAN discounter Aldi is to transfer up to 49 back-office jobs to head offices in Naas, Co Kildare and the UK with a “generous” redundancy package on offer for those who opt to leave the company.

Staff in Mitchellstown, Cork, where Aldi has a distribution centre, have been told that several roles will move to Naas or Atherstone in the UK, while some roles in Naas will also relocate to the UK. It is understood that a lead-in time of up to two years has been given to those interested in moving.

The move is linked to the group-wide introduction of a new SAP technology system, which aims to make the business more efficient.

While these jobs are relocating some job losses are likely. The roles are in the areas of finance, administration and trading, mainly in the areas of product-forecasting and ordering.

In addition to the redundancy packages, relocation costs are also on offer as well as a commitment to try and find alternative roles for affected staff locally. For example, the buying team located in Naas is continuing to grow.

A spokesman for Aldi said: “We are relocating a small number of regional administrative and product-forecasting roles to our head offices in Naas and Atherstone following a significant investment in our IT infrastructure.

“These roles will transfer to our head offices by 2020 at the earliest and opportunities are also available for relocation to our expanding buying department which is also located in Naas.

“We continue to invest and grow strongly in Ireland and are currently engaged in a €160m programme to open 20 new stores over three years and revamp all existing stores as part of Project Fresh and create 400 new jobs.”
